Culture and Geography

Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres off the southeast coast of the African continent. The time zone (GMT+4 ) enables trading and business to be conducted with Africa, Europe, Asia and the US on the same business day. The capital and largest city is Port Louis. Mauritius offers a unique example of ethnic diversity and cultural fusion. This melting pot of cultures not only shapes its social fabric but also influences its economic, political, and cultural life in profound ways.

The island’s historical background, marked by colonization, slavery, and indentured labour, has led to the diverse demographic landscape seen today. This diversity is mirrored in the nation’s languages, religions, cuisines, and arts, making Mauritius a fascinating case study of multiculturalism.

Legal Landscape

Mauritius has a fully functioning and effective legal system. Unlike other countries that have become republics, Mauritius has retained the right of appeal to the Judicial Committee of the UK Privy Council, which remains the highest appellate court of the country. Mauritius boasts a hybrid legal system, drawing from  both French and British legal  traditions. The two colonial powers that have significantly influenced Mauritian law are France and Britain.

This hybrid system harmoniously combines elements from both civil law (based on the French “Code Napoleon”) and common law (derived from English legal principles).
