Culture and Geography

Cyprus is an island nation in the Eastern Mediterranean, strategically positioned at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Its location provides convenient access to European and regional markets, while its membership in the European Union since 2004 and adoption of the euro in 2008 strengthen its position as an international business hub. Nicosia is the capital and the country’s main administrative and business centre. English is widely spoken and commonly used in business, alongside the country’s official languages, Greek and Turkish.

Cyprus has a diverse and internationally oriented economy, with strong connections to Europe and neighbouring markets. Its geographical position, EU membership, skilled workforce, and business-friendly environment have contributed to its development as a centre for financial services, shipping, technology, and international business.

Legal Landscape

Cyprus has a legal system strongly influenced by English common law and equity, reflecting its historical connection with the United Kingdom. Following EU accession, European Union law became an important component of the Cypriot legal framework. The combination of common-law principles, EU legislation, and an established court system provides a familiar legal environment for many international businesses.

Cyprus also provides mechanisms for the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments and arbitral awards, supporting its attractiveness as a jurisdiction for cross-border commercial activities and dispute resolution.

Cyprus maintains an extensive network of double taxation agreements with countries around the world. These agreements are designed to reduce the risk of double taxation and provide greater certainty for businesses and investors conducting international operations. Cyprus continues to expand and update its treaty network, including a new Cyprus–Oman agreement effective from 2026.

Banking in Cyprus

Cyprus has developed into an established European financial centre serving international businesses and investors. Its banking and financial-services sector operates within the EU regulatory framework and is supported by the Central Bank of Cyprus and other supervisory authorities. The country also has a growing investment-funds, asset-management, insurance, payments, and fintech ecosystem.

Cyprus combines its EU regulatory framework with a strategic Mediterranean location and a multilingual professional workforce, making it attractive for companies seeking access to European and regional markets.
